Overly large, sagging breasts can be uncomfortable,
detracting from a woman’s appearance, restrict certain
activities and be unhealthy. Breast reduction surgery reduces
overdeveloped breasts and can help with these problems by
alleviating back pain, hand numbness, breathing difficulty,
and shoulder strap furrows.
Pregnancy and Nursing?
If you plan on having children, you should discuss this in your
consultation with your surgeon.Your ability to nurse after
breast reduction is unpredictable. If you choose to nurse after
your surgery, you will probably experience some temporary
engorgement.
Mammograms?
Breast reduction and our recommendations for cancer
screenings do not change the risk of developing breast
cancer. You should perform self breast exams once a month
and a new baseine mammogram should be performed one
year after your surgery. Any further recommendations will be
made by your surgeon or doctor during your consultation.
Best Candidates
for Breast Reduction?
The best candidates for a breast reduction are women who
have very large breasts and require physical relief. Other
candidates include women whose one breast is significantly
larger than the other. Another possible candidate is women
who have indentations in their shoulders from bra straps and
women who are self-concious or unsatisfied with their large
breasts. Procedure Performance?
Traditional breast reduction surgery usually is an outpatient
procedure, but sometimes it is performed as an inpatient with
general anesthesia and can take two to four hours. There can
be many variations with the procedure. The most common
procedure involves an incision that circles the areola and
extends down, following the curve of the crease underneath
the breast.Your surgeon will remove your excess glandular and
fatty tissue. Following the removal, your nipple and areola are
placed into their new position.Your skin is then drawn together
and down your areola, providing you with your newly shaped
breast. Excluding if your breasts are very large and pendulous,
your nipples are likely to remain.
Is Breast Liposuction Right for You?
Breast liposuction can be a safer alternative to breast
reduction surgery. Breast liposuction might be an option for
you
if your breasts are large and if the desired reduction is only
1-3
sizes. Because the female breast contains 50% fat, the
liposuction is able to remove the fatty tissue, but not glandular
tissue. The procedure most often is performed with twilight
sleep anesthesia combined with local anesthesia. The
procedures allows most patients a quicker recovery time. As
compared with breast reduction, breast liposuction scarring is
minimal. Depending on the size of your breasts, breast
liposuction could be an option for you.
How Will I Feel After Surgery?
With a typical breast reduction surgery, the recovery can be
extensive. After your surgery, it is recommended that you sleep
on your back to avoid any unnecessary pressure on your
breasts. You should avoid any strenous activities for several
weeks after.Avoid any sexual activity one to two weeks
following your surgery. After about three weeks, your stitches
will
be removed. Bruising and swelling may take six weeks to
disappear. Scarring may take one to two years to flatten and
fade. The scarring for breast liposuction is small, hidden
underneath the breast fold, and out of sight.
The results of breast
reduction surgery remain permament.
However, your breast size may change due to weight gain
and / or pregnancy.
If breast liposuction surgery is performed,
the patient is
encouraged to resume normal activities when she is
comfortable to do so. |
